Flying to Europe tips – where to start?

There are two things you’ll need to ask yourself before considering flights to Europe, these are:

  • Where are you staying in Croatia?
  • When are you traveling and how long for?

It’s important you have a good idea of these two things before looking at flights, as this can help you pick the best airports, travel times and airport transfers if needed.

Choosing where to fly to

Croatia has a few airports scattered across the country which you can fly to from the USA, and knowing your base location in Croatia can help whittle your options down to the most appropriate. Most flights will go to Dubrovnik, Split or Zagreb airports. However, it is worth making a note of these places, even if you’re staying elsewhere in Croatia, as they will likely be your closest airports.

Most tours will include airport transfer in their itineraries, including the tours here at Adventures Croatia. However, airport transfers can be pre-booked via private taxi services and airport buses. Or they can be arranged once you arrive at the airport – although this can sometimes be more expensive and stressful than having it included in a package deal.

What are the best airports to fly into Europe?

Flights to Croatia can be found from most major cities in the US. Only a select few airlines do direct flights from the US to Croatia, the most popular of these is United which offers direct flights from New York (Newark) to Dubrovnik during peak times.

Although a direct flight is great, it is only an option for travelers located on the east coast and people wanting to go to Dubrovnik. But don’t fret, there are plenty of other options on how to travel to Croatia.

Indirect flights from the US to Croatia

One of the best ways to fly to Croatia is via stopovers. Alas, a little less direct, flights with stopovers give people the opportunity to see other places in Europe and save money on their travels. Some of the best places to fly into in Europe, especially for stopovers are:

Rome and Venice, Italy – Italy is only a stone’s throw from Croatia and makes for a beautiful stopover to get you in the mood for summer vibes. You can fly directly from Rome into Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik with Croatia Airlines. Although you don’t necessarily need to fly from Italy – there are plenty of buses and ferries that go directly from Venice to Croatia which travelers can use when arriving in the northern part of Croatia.

London, UK – The UK has many airports available to fly to from the US, all of which offer direct flights to different places in Croatia. London fly’s to most destinations of note in Croatia from Zagreb, Rijeka, Zadar, Dubrovnik and Split, most of which operate during the summer months when tourism is at its peak. Be warned, you may need to transfer between airports if your in-flight destination is in a different airport than that of your outbound flight. This is a potential issue that you can avoid by booking with us.

Munich and Frankfurt, Germany – Germany is probably one of the best places to stop over as it has an array of airports that fly directly to Croatia. Of these, Munich and Frankfurt are the best airports to fly to as they have the biggest variety of Croatian cities to choose as your final destination.

You’ve arrived at your destination! What do you need for entry into Croatia?

Hopefully, our flying to Europe tips have left you well-versed on how to get to the continent, but what happens once you’ve landed? There are a few things you should prepare before traveling to Croatia:

A valid passport – This may sound obvious, but there are certain things your passport will need to be valid for travel into Europe. The European Commission states that “passports must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the date on which you intend to leave the Schengen territory.” As Croatia is part of the EU, the same rule applies. You will also need empty pages in your passport for stamps in and out of the country.

No Visa – Yes you read that right! Any U.S. passport holder does not require a visa to travel to Croatia. Although this is only valid for people traveling for tourism or business and staying for less than 90 days within a 180-day period.

No Covid requirements – There are currently no covid restrictions in place as of the date of this blog. Passengers will not be required to show proof of immunity or complete Covid tests upon entry into the country.

Money – As of January 2023, Croatia will be adopting the Euro as its official currency. Please ensure you exchange dollars into Euros rather than the former Croatian Kuna. It is important to note that you can only travel to Croatia with up to 10,000 Euros on hand.
