Croatia’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage has designated 10 sites in Croatia as being places of historical and/or cultural significance. This means that in addition to diving, yachting, partying, wine tasting and all the other activities there are for visitors to enjoy, culture and history buffs can view these important sites as well.
Here is a list of Croatia’s UNESCO World Heritage sites and the dates they were recognized by the organization.

National Park Plitvice Lakes
This park is the oldest, largest and most often visited park in Croatia by far. It made the list in 1979 because of its diverse flora and fauna and due to its 16 turquoise lakes. The beauty of this national park can only be described as majestic. People from all over the world come to see this fairytale-like park. And although there is a fee for entrance, it is well worth it for nature lovers and anyone interested in historic sites.
Episcopal Complex of the Euphrasian Basilica in the Historic Centre of Porec
This example of early Byzantine art is one of the most complex religious structures in Europe. Moreover, there are numerous mosaics to be viewed that tell a story about 6th worship. Some of the mosaics are still intact today. This leads the religiously devout and those who are history buffs with no religious affiliation to visit the basilica often.
Historic City of Trogir
This city is a reflection of Roman architecture and is only 30 kilometers from Split. Here tourists can visit the Cathedral at St. Lawrence and the Kamerlengo Fortress. This 15th fortress was the governor’s palace when Venetians ruled the city.
Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe
Some parts of this site are located in countries other than Croatia since it extends into different parts of Europe. However, Croatia does share some of these beech forests and since the eco-system is so delicately woven to all regions, we lay proud claim to this UNESCO site.
