From the coast of Dubrovnik, we climb deep to the heart of the Balkans along the Neretva River, famed for its unusually beautiful emerald waters, and make our way to the picturesque town of Mostar in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The slim, elegant Stari Most (Old Bridge), arches over the swirling Neretva River and provides this ancient town with its icon and name: Mostar meaning ‘keeper of the bridge’. Flanking the bridge is the old cobbled Ottoman Quarter, a haven for the city’s artists and craftsmen, along with 16th-century mosques, old Turkish houses, and endless cafés. The bridge, which long united the two sections of the city built along both sides of the Neretva Gorge, became a casualty of the war in 1993.  To international acclaim, the symbolically and literally critical bridge was carefully rebuilt and reopened to reunite hearts and Mostar in 2004.  After the tour, we’ll have time to enjoy some serious Mostar coffee and delicious traditional cakes and learn more about daily life in Bosnia and Herzegovina before returning to Dubrovnik.
