Guide to Planning a Family Trip to Croatia

A family trip to Croatia promises memories that will last a lifetime. It provides an incredible opportunity to bond as a family and experience new things together.

Whether you’re planning on exploring ancient cities, relaxing on pristine beaches, or immersing yourself in lush national parks, Croatia offers a diverse range of activities that cater to all ages.

Family Travel to Croatia

When planning a family trip, one of your first thoughts may be how safe is Croatia for travel? Rest assured, Croatia has a reputation for being a safe and secure place to visit in Europe, with a low crime rate, warm hospitality, and an inclusive culture.

All major cities and destinations in Croatia are well connected via highways. Driving in Croatia, whether it be by private transfer or hire car, is relatively easy, with well-maintained roads and scenic surroundings.

The dining scene in Croatia is relatively informal and relaxed. Kids menus may be scarce but there are plenty of child-friendly dishes in Croatia, including risotto, pasta, and pizza.

Where to go on a Croatia family vacation

Deciding where to go on a family trip to Croatia can be daunting, especially when there are so many diverse and beautiful regions to choose from, each with their own charms and highlights.

The Istrian Coast

Picturesque Croatian beach towns, rolling vineyards, and azure waters characterize the Istrian Coast. Nature parks such as Cape Kamenjak and Brijuni National Park promise exciting activities such as hiking, kayaking, and open-water swimming.

Charming cities such as Rovinj and Poreč are perfect for families, with a wonderful blend of historic sights and modern amenities. Wander through Rovinj’s cobblestoned streets and admire the colorful houses and bustling harbor, followed by a trip up to the Church of St. Euphemia for panoramic views over the city.

There are many family beaches dotted along the Istrian Coast, with clear waters and shallow shores. The beaches within Zlatni Rt (Golden Cape) Forest Park, especially Golden Cape Beach and Lone Bay Beach, are a must-visit.

Dubrovnik

Described as the Pearl of the Adraitic, Dubrovnik cannot be missed on a Croatian family vacation. Dubrovnik’s main attractions are located in close proximity to one another and therefore the city is easily walkable, with the Old Town being a car-free zone.

Explore Durbovnik’s Old Town, including a walk around the city’s walls, and visit historical landmarks such as Rector’s Palace, Sponza Palace, and the Franciscan Monastery. Travel up Mount Srđ by cable car for incredible views out over Dubrovnik and the surrounding Adriatic Sea.

Take a short boat ride to Lokrum Island to experience the lush gardens, peacocks, and historical ruins. This is a lovely destination for family activities such as picnicking, hiking, and swimming.

Makarska Riviera

Stretching 37 miles along the Adriatic Coast, the Makarska Riviera is perfect for families seeking a blend of adventure and relaxation. Makarska Town is located centrally along the coast and is a great base for families, with a palm-lined promenade and vibrant Old Town.

The area is renowned for its beautiful pebble beaches with calm, clear waters that are safe for young swimmers. Popular family beaches include Brela’s Punta Rata Beach and Tučepi Beach, both of which offer amenities such as sunbeds, umbrellas, and nearby cafes.

For older kids and teenagers, the excursions are endless. Zipline above the treetops in Tucepi, kayak along the stunning coastline, or go snorkeling. A day trip to the Cetina River is also a great option, where you can go rafting, canoeing, or boating.

Split

Split, the second-largest city in Croatia, offers a wealth of experiences as a Croatian family vacation destination. The dining options are endless, ranging from tiny cafes to upscale restaurants.

Walk around Diocletan’s Palace, one of the best preserved Roman ruins outside of Italy, on a guided tour where you can learn more about the history of the city. Aquarium Split, located near the city center, showcases marine life from the Adriatic Sea and beyond. It’s a great place for children to learn about different species of fish, turtles, and other sea creatures.

Day trips to Krka National Park, which is around an hour’s drive away, is another exciting day out. The well-maintained wooden walkways and bridges offer incredible views out over the cascading waterfalls and pools.

Private Charters

There are over 1,000 islands and islets along the Dalmatian Coast, each with its own individual allure. Island hopping is an exciting Croatian family vacation, where you can spend quality time together as a family.

Step aboard your privately crewed yacht, along with a private chef, who will take care of your every need, allowing you to unwind and appreciate the glittering Adriatic Sea around you.

When to go on a family trip to Croatia

The peak summer months, between late June and August, are the busiest time of the year in Croatia. Tourists flock to the region to soak up the Mediterranean sun, enjoy seaside dining, and swim in the wonderful sea.

The shoulder seasons, in May and September, are the best time to travel as a family to Croatia. The country is generally less busy with fewer crowds, offering a more serene and relaxed experience. The weather during this time is pleasant, with warm weather and sunny days very likely.
