Visit Croatia Any Time of Year
Croatia’s famous and fabulous coast has been a beacon for European travelers for more than a century (actually millennia when you consider Diocletian’s Palace and traces of Roman summer villas out on the islands). Peak season has long been July and August when the sea is warmest along the Mediterranean, and families flee northern Europe for their long vacations, and students trade studies for travel.
In recent years, Adventures Croatia has seen September become one of the most popular months, along with June and May. The crowds are a little less, and the weather is very nice, less hot and humid, the sea very pleasant for swimming. Demand is still outstripping supply for the nicer properties, definitely high season, so there really isn’t much of a price break, but there is less jostling with the throngs of tourists and traffic jams.
I spent all of October 2016 in Croatia and the region, sourcing new experiences for clients, and it was wonderful! Services were still fully available, lovely weather with a few refreshing showers, beautiful seasonal foods, and far fewer tourists were my rewards, with advantaged hotel pricing an additional enticement. April and March are also that “shoulder season”, with similar benefits for those who can schedule their travel then.
And many sports and adventures such as river rafting, sailing, climbing, and hiking are often better during these seasons, with spring blossoms or autumn’s colorful leaves as a beautiful backdrop.
November through February offers the least expensive travel, and ideal times for taking in the varied and fascinating museums, many of the scenic sights without crowds at all, and the award-winning Christmas markets (Zagreb was named the #1 European Christmas market for the past two years!!) The food and wine remain excellent, and the colder months encourage more exploration of the heartier fare such as goulashes, stews, soups, pasticada, čorba, sarma, and amazing local cured meats and artisan cheeses. Days are shorter, the weather is cooler, and you may create eye-popping pictures with brooding dark skies, yet you may also experience bright sunny days with brilliant blue skies.
There is fantastic skiing and other winter sports in Croatia and nearby Sarajevo and Slovenia. Airfares are cheaper, fewer lines at all cultural events, better shopping, and you’ll see more locals living life locally.
