When is the best time to visit Croatia?

Weather in Croatia can be generally divided into two climates. Northern Croatia has a Continental climate, with average temperatures ranging from near freezing in January to about 77°F in August. The coastal areas have more of a Mediterranean climate, with average temperatures ranging from the mid-40s Fahrenheit in January to 100°F or more in August. The coastal summertime temperatures come with a breeze and can always be cured with a quick dip in the sea to cool off as the locals do. Spring and autumn are pleasant and mild along the coast; winter inland can be cold and snowy.

“Our favorite months to visit Croatia are late-September and early-October when the region is not so crowded with summer visitors. This leaves quieter walking trails, emptier beaches, and minimal lines for attractions. The temperatures are pleasant and there is still plenty of sunshine. The unique backdrop of spring flowers and fall leaves is a special memory to treasure as well.” – Mimi Kent Bohm – Adventures Croatia Travel Specialist

Summertime is very lively and days are filled with festivals, music, social happenings, great boating, and the best water temps. Warm luscious nights make it perfect to spend your evenings outside enjoying a cocktail or strolling along the seaside promenades.

However, Croatia during “shoulder season” from April to early June and mid-September to October is when the prices come down and so do the numbers of tourists! Not to mention, the weather is typically gorgeous during shoulder season!! Cities like Dubrovnik and Split, as well as the National Parks like Plitvice, can become a bit congested during the peak months but that’s why you leave the trip designing to us, the experts!! Adventures Croatia knows all the tricks and tips to avoid the crowds and optimize your quality travel time.

Month by Month Guide to Traveling Croatia

March-April

Spring Season:  Average temperatures: 57F – 52F

While not a typically touristy period, in recent years Croatia has become very accessible to tourists during the spring. Celebrating the. Easter holiday and seeing the flora come to life gives a different visual to the Balkans. We highly recommend exploring all over the region in the springtime!

May-June / September-October

Shoulder Season: Average temperatures: 72F – 64F

The weather on the coast is usually nice, the sea warm, and the prices lower in May, June, September, and October, but some establishments, especially those on the islands, might be shuttered and some ferry routes might be canceled or on reduced schedules.

July-August

High-season: Average temperatures: 82F – 77F

The bottom line is that in July and August, good weather is almost a certainty and tourism is in full swing, but prices and availability on the coast can be prohibitive. Conversely, in the interior, summer crowds are minimal and prices can reach their lowest levels. Zagreb and other interior cities can be real bargains in summer because many residents will be on the coast, leaving the towns less crowded than usual. (Accordingly, many Zagreb restaurants and shops may be closed.)

November-February

Off Season: Average temperatures: 57F – 48F

A bit colder, much of Croatia’s coastline closes for the winter season. Many ferries are shut down in the winter, so except restricted island access across the coast. Big cities around the country will, of course, be active, but don’t expect beach weather.   If you are a fan of Christmas markets, Zagreb and Ljubljana are both great visits in December. Don’t be afraid of traveling off-season, especially if trusting our regional specialists to assist you in planning your journey.
