Croatia’s Unforgettable Food And Wine
When you head out on vacation with a group of people – whether it’s with family members, extended family members, or friends of friends – finding activities that cater for everyone’s tastes can be tricky.
Thankfully, Croatia really does have something for everyone, and activities that tick a lot of the same boxes for a lot of different people.
I’m going to focus on some of the excellent wineries that the country has to offer, because who doesn’t like wine and tasting wine? Throughout its regions, Croatia boasts world-class wines and wineries, and visiting them can be a magical and unique way to explore the country, bring everyone on your trip together and learn about Croatia’s heritage and family, grass-roots businesses.
I’m going to highlight wineries that we have excellent relationships with, and are perfect for taking a tour around, finding out how they make their wines and, of course, sampling what they have to offer.
Kozlović winery, in Istria, overlooks the Momjan and Valle valleys and is one of the best-known in the region. The family has been producing wines in the Valle valley since 1904, starting with one vineyard and building up to 25 today.
The winery is supervised and run by its fourth generation – Gianfranco and Antonella – who took over the business in 1998 and now produce a series of wines that suit every palate.
Moving into the picturesque Pelješac peninsula – in Dalmatia – the Miloš family has been producing wine in the area for many generations, using the Plavac Mali grape. Today, Miloš winery owns 15 hectares of vineyards on some of the highest quality positions of the Pelješac peninsula.
Further inland, near Skradin, the Bibich winery is a family-owned ’boutique’ winery focuses on indigenous varieties, and has been producing wine since the 15th century. Not only that, but the late superstar chef Anthony Bourdain visited this swanky winery during one the episodes for his No Reservations TV series.
These three stunning examples of Croatian agri-tourism allows you and your traveling group to not only sample the wines themselves but also take in the incredible scenery and also try their great, home-cooked food while you’re there.
Speaking of food, there’s no better way to bridge the generational gap than to get everyone around a dinner table, eat beautiful food and talk.
Lešić Dimitri Palace on Korčula island is a fabulous Michelin-starred restaurant that takes its inspiration from the Adriatic ocean itself and the beautiful coastal gardens that border it.
Another Michelin-starred restaurant is also well worth a visit.
Boškinac, on the island of Pag is known for its interpretation of traditional island cuisine, and presents gorgeous treats that include a wide selection of fish and lamb dishes, cheeses, prosciutto and other fresh, seasonal ingredients, with olive oil, herbs and honey. All, of course, served in that special, Michelin-starred way.
Food and drink experience really are great ways to bring people of different generations and from different walks of life together, and we use our expertise and knowledge to work with restaurants and wineries who open their family-run businesses to give you a real flavor of Croatian life.
