The terroir in Istria produces every style of wine that can be made, including sparkling and sweet and fortified wines. There are three distinct soil types in Istria – red soil, gray soil, and white soil, which allow a wide range of varietal and styles to be produced.

History of Istrian Wine
Istria’s winemaking is thought to date back to Roman times. The Venetians influenced the region’s winemaking practices by introducing architecture, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques.
Phylloxera struck at the end of the 19th century, decimating many of Istrian vineyards. The region’s previous 44,000 hectares of vineyards decreased to 4,000 hectares during this period. In the early 20th century, the vineyards began to be restored and winemaking evolved with changing grape varieties and modern wine-making techniques.
In the mid 1990s, Istria had a wine revolution, in which the region began to gradually receive international recognition. The best Istrian wines have received various highly-accredited awards such as Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA), highlighting the impressive quality of the region.
Istria is continuing to innovate and follow trends in the winemaking world. Many wine producers in Istria are shifting towards more sustainable and organic wine production as well as trying new winemaking styles such as orange or skin-contact wine.
Best Istrian Grape Varieties

Malvasia Istriana (Malvazija Istarska)
This white wine is the most widely planted and popular grape variety in Istria, and can be found on wine lists throughout the country. It is a highly versatile variety that can be produced in a range of styles, including dry wines and skin contact (orange) wines.
The wine is typically pale straw yellow. Malvasia Istriana exhibits aromas of stone fruits such as peach and apricot as well as florals, which are usually acacia blossoms. You will often find mineral and almond notes as well.
Depending on the producer, Malvazija can range from fresh and light to more complex, aged versions and typically pairs well with seafood and light pasta dishes.
Teran
Teran dates back to the 14th century and is a historically important Croatian wine. It is perhaps the best Istrian wine and thrives on the red soils of the region.
Teran grapes produce wines that are deep ruby in color, with high acidity and tannins. The high acidity and extract levels contribute to the robust and full nature of the wine while maintaining harmony and balance in the mouth. The tasting notes often include dark berries, spices, and earthy undertones.
These wines pair well with hearty red meat and game dishes, especially when they are well seasoned and spiced.
Momjan Muscat
Momjan is a small, hilltop town near the Slovenian border and produces a local variety of muscat grapes called Momjan Muscat. These grapes have adapted to the Istrian lands and produce a wine like no other. Momjan Muscat demands considerable care and due to its disease-prone nature, has decreased in production over the years.
The wines traditionally produced with Momjan Muscat are semi-sweet but dry and sweet styles are also produced. The wines have an aromatic nose, with flavors of apricot, peach, tropical fruits, honey, and a distinct floral undertone.
International varieties
As a result of both the history and proximity to Italy, Istria is also known for its Italian grape varieties such as Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco and Refosco.
International varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Sauvingon Blanc are also well represented throughout Istria. Many winemakers take pride in expressing the unique terroir of Istria through these international grape varieties. These varieties are also frequently blended with local grape varietals to create interesting wines.
