10 Day Land Tour

Visiting: ZAGREB – MALI LOŠINJ – PULA – ROVINJ – VENICE

Day 1 –      ZAGREB AIRPORT – ZAGREB

Unveil the secrets behind the old facades, discover the hidden courtyards and revive the stories from the past. We’ll give you a completely new perspective of the Zagreb City. Walking tour of Zagreb starts with the main square Ban Jelačić, Cathedral,

Tkalčićeva street, the Stone Gate, Upper Town, the historical center of the city, St. Mark’s Church with the famed multi-colored roof.  Using funicular, close to the Lotrščak Tower, you can go down to the Lower town to see a part of famous Ilica street, the Croatian National Theatre, University and so much more.

The Cathedral of the Assumption dominates Kaptol, its glowing towers you see off in the distance is the most immediately recognizable and commanding feature in town. It is an ornate and impressive wonder of neo-Gothic artistry. The cathedral was founded in 1093, heavily damaged in 1242 after various sieges by the Tartars, then again in 1625 after a wave of fires. But the bad luck goes on, in 1880 it was seriously damaged during an earthquake. In 1990 exterior renovations set in motion to battle against the wearing effects of time. Just up from the main square (Trg Bana J. Jelacica) by the stairs, you will find the colorful Dolac market. To the back of the market square, there are the touristy stalls which sell souvenirs. But actually, the market itself is for the locals to buy fresh produce. Downstairs you will find the meat etc. sections.

St. Mark’s Church – In the highest area of historic Zagreb this church is characterized by its roof with red, blue and white representing the coat of arms of Zagreb. The building was constructed by Venetian masters, even the baroque bell tower is an addition of the seventeenth century. Inside there are Gothic vaults and a choir designed by Ivan Mestrovic. The square where it is situated is a symbol of political life because here are the locations of the Sabor (Parliament), neoclassical building, and the Croatian government.

The Upper Town, which is the medieval core of the city, developed as two separate (and often warring) towns –Kaptol, the seat of the Bishop (where the imposing Cathedral now stands), and Gradec, the free town where tradesmen and artisans lived (proclaimed by King Bela of Hungary in the 12th century) merged in the 1770s to form the northern section of historic Zagreb. Following this, the city expanded south of today’s Trg Bana Josipa Jelacica (Jelačić Square) to the railway station and the Sava River.

Old Town Gate, at the top of Radićeva street (Upper Town). now a shrine to Virgin Mary – the “Kamenita vrata” where you can light a candle or place a vow and, as the locals believe, your wish will be granted. Please be silent and respectful, even if just passing through the Gate. The portrait of Mary is said to be sacred because it is the only thing that survived the great fire in Zagreb in 1731. Near the Old Town Gate is the sculpture of St. George having slain the dragon. The other statue, him fighting the dragon, is located on the Marshal Tito’s Square near the Croatian National Theatre.

Strossmayer šetalište. (eng. Strossmayer’s walkway) In the summer, it is an outdoor scene for painters, musicians and other artists offering food, drinks, performances, and concerts. Popular meeting place for all ages, with a great view of the

Mali Lošinj dates back to the 12th century when twelve Croatian families settled in the eastern bay St. Martin. First Croatian settlers were farmers, later they also turned to fishing, sailing, and shipbuilding, and with that, the settlements moved towards the coast

Day 3 –      MALI LOŠINJ

The golden age for Mali Lošinj was the end of the 19th century when thanks to seafaring the “small village” turned into a maritime town. Because of the big changes and the maritime crisis in the region, due to passing from sailboats to steamboats, it seemed that the destiny of this and similar towns were sealed. Upon discovering the health benefits of the climate, and growing of the new economic realm, tourism, a new page in the island’s history was open.

There are only seven surviving statues of the ancient Greek athlete Apoxyomenos in the world, one of which was found right here in Croatia. More than two thousand years old ancient bronze statue of an unknown author was found in 1999 in the sea near the island of Lošinj, wedged between two rocks at a depth of 45 meters. Over two-thousand-year-old athlete was lifted from the depths of the sea and after almost seven years of restoration returned to its former glory.

The statue represents an athlete, a young sportsman at the moment of cleaning oil, dust, and sweat from his body with a scraping tool, after a competition. During the restoration, which lasted almost seven years, while researching the material and style of workmanship, it was determined that the statue dates from 2nd-1st century BC, while the prototype which it was based on is considerably older, from the middle of the 4th century BC.

From the eight known variations of the Apoxyomenos prototype, the Lošinj statue is the most complete and best-preserved. The statue of Apoxyomenos, which was extracted from Lošinj`s seabed on 27 April 1999 will be permanently exhibited in Mali Lošinj, at the Kvarner Palace from 2016.

Apoxyomenos is not the only gem in Losinj’s cultural heritage. Austro-Hungarian villas and captain’s houses, monasteries, a fort, a basilica, ancient remains, museums, churches, and chapels are all to be found.  Visit the Town Museum in the Fritzy Palace, or the chapel Annunziata in Cikat Bay and learn more about the island’s rich maritime history, its glorious captains, and their fleets. Mali Lošinj is also known for its gastronomic delicacies, as well as a plethora of classical music, sporting, and cultural events.

Čikat forest park is a man-made ecosystem that has resulted from deliberate efforts to shape the landscape and act in harmony with nature. Several attractive marked walking paths pass through the forest park. The origins of Čikat forest park date back to the year 1886 when the Society for Afforestation and Embellishment of Mali Lošinj was established.

The lush forest of Aleppo pine was planted on barren land at the end of the 19th century as a result of the endeavors of the Society for Afforestation and Embellishment of Mali Lošinj under the guidance of Ambroz Haračić, a renowned naturalist, and patriot from Lošinj. The promontory of Anuncijata hosts the church of the Blessed Virgin Mary that was built in 1858. This is the traditional votive church of Lošinj’s seafarers.

Day 7 –     MALI LOŠINJ – PULA – ROVINJ

Pula is the largest town on the Istrian peninsula and offers a diversity of attractions to lovers of culture. The rich itinerary of its three-thousand-year-old history, where every step you take through the old town is a landmark, begins and ends with the Roman amphitheater. While strolling through Pula you will come across numerous monuments of Roman architecture: The Triumphal Arch of the Sergi from the 1st century B.C., Hercules’ Gate and Twin Gates, the Temple of Augustus, Arena and Small Roman Theater in the town center.

A unique experience will be moments of relaxation in the main town square, which has managed to retain its role as the meeting place since the Augustan Age.

There is a strong Roman influence in Pula’s history, evidenced by the largely intact Roman coliseum that dominates the center of the city. The Arena is an assuming presence in Pula. You can see its stone walls from almost any point in the city. This three-level coliseum may be much smaller than the one in Rome, but it is no less impressive. The Arena was built in the 1st century AD and was used until the 5th century for gladiator fights. More than 26,000 spectators could fit inside the arena along the terraced seating. Below ground is a series of tunnels and rooms where the animals and gladiators awaited their fights. Although some of the structure was pilfered over the years, the exterior remains and is one of the most well-preserved of the Roman amphitheaters that are still standing. Today, the Arena is used to host events and performances. You can take a tour of the Coliseum and learn a bit about it in the attached museum.

The Temple of Augustus was built in the 2nd century BC and was dedicated to Emperor Augustus and the goddess Roma. It’s been used for many different purposes throughout its long history – a temple, a church, and even a granary. During WWII, it was hit by a bomb that almost completely destroyed it, along with the other two buildings that were part of the complex, but it has been mostly restored to what it was like 2,000 years ago. One of the other structures, The Temple of Diana, is represented on its back wall. You can take a quick tour of the interior for less than $2 (it’s a small space).

The building currently houses some Roman stone and bronze sculptures.

Triumphal Arch of Sergius – Also built in the 1st century, the Triumphal Arch of Sergius is a monument erected to honor the members of the Sergii family who fought and died in a battle between Octavian’s Roman army and Mark Antony’s Egyptian-Roman army — a battle in which Octavian and the Sergiis were triumphant. The Arch leads into the old town center and has an ornate decoration with fluted columns and chariots engraved along the top.

Not far from the Arena is one of the old city gates that was built in the 2nd century AD. It’s called the Twin Gate because there is actually two gates side by side. Rumor has it that the double gates were necessary to allow more townspeople into the city during gladiator fights and other major town events. The gates are very well preserved and open up to a central part of the old town where people still hang out. In fact, it can get pretty crowded during the day when tourists are enjoying the surrounding shops.

Rovinj is the most romantic place in the Mediterranean! The town of Rovinj is the right destination if you are seeking a sentimental atmosphere of the times that have forever gone by. Rovinj has begun its romantic life on an island, its restricted area resulting in crowded houses, narrow streets and small squares, still untouched by modern urbanism.

Built upon a rich fishermen’s tradition, it has become distinctive for its unique boat called batana and its songs bitinada. Its beauty was particularly appreciated by artists who have painted the most beautiful motifs here and exhibited them on Grisia, the street of artists

The old town of Rovinj is the protected historical center of Rovinj with Town Hall building and large square lined with renaissance houses from the 16th century, the most appealing part of the town for visitors. The narrow cobbled alleyways and the small squares which have witnessed the turbulent history of the town are full of medieval, gothic, renaissance, and baroque buildings and terraces.

On the northern side, you will find the remains of the walls which used to protect the town’s inhabitants from conquerors and looters as well as Balbi’s Arch from 1679.

Walking down the old alleys is a very special experience – you will feel like time has stopped and you have returned to the ancient era.

Walking in the historical old town, you will find a new surprise at every step. St Euphemia Parish Church, the symbol of the town of Rovinj, other small churches, monuments, old doors and arches wait behind every corner, and if you find yourself in need of a break and rest, your kind hosts will invite you into one of the numerous restaurants.

Visit the old town of Rovinj, the keeper of history and heritage of one of the most photogenic Mediterranean towns, walk Bregovita and Švalbina streets, lined with baroque buildings or the Grisia Street where Rovinj artists exhibit their pieces with a personal approach and talk to visitors.

Day 9 –     ROVINJ – VENICE

The UNESCO World Heritage property comprises the city of Venice and its lagoon situated in the Veneto Region of Northeast Italy. Founded in the 5th century AD and spread over 118 small islands, Venice became a major maritime power in the 10th century. The whole city is an extraordinary architectural masterpiece in which even the smallest building contains works by some of the world’s greatest artists such as Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese, and others.

In this lagoon covering approximately 30 sq. miles, nature, and history have been closely linked since the 5th century when Venetian populations, to escape barbarian raids, found refuge on the sandy islands of Torcello, Jesolo, and Malamocco. These temporary settlements gradually became permanent and the initial refuge of the land-dwelling peasants and fishermen became a maritime power. Over the centuries, during the entire period of the expansion of Venice, when it was obliged to defend its trading markets against the commercial undertakings of the Arabs, the Genoese, and the Ottoman Turks, Venice never ceased to consolidate its position in the lagoon.

In this inland sea that has continuously been under threat, rises amid a tiny archipelago at the very edge of the waves one of the most extraordinary built-up areas of the Middle Ages. From Torcello to the north to Chioggia to the south, almost every small island had its own settlement, town, fishing village and artisan village (Murano). However, at the heart of the lagoon, Venice itself stood as one of the greatest capitals in the medieval world. When a group of tiny islands was consolidated and organized in a unique urban system, nothing remained of the primitive topography but what became canals, such as the Giudecca Canal, St Mark’s Canal and the Great Canal, and a network of small rii that are the veritable arteries of a city on water.

Venice and its lagoon landscape is the result of a dynamic process which illustrates the interaction between people and the ecosystem of their natural environment over time. Human interventions show high technical and creative skills in the realization of the hydraulic and architectural works in the lagoon area. The unique cultural heritage accumulated in the lagoon over the centuries is attested by the discovery of important archaeological settlements in the Altino area and other sites on the mainland, which were important communication and trade hubs.

Venice and its lagoon form an inseparable whole of which the city of Venice is the pulsating historic heart and a unique artistic achievement. The influence of Venice on the development of architecture and monumental arts has been considerable.
