Varaždin
Varaždin is a city situated along the Drava River in the northern reaches of Croatia. Known for its Baroque and Rococo architecture, it’s a great place to spend a day strolling through the streets and exploring the sights.
Every year, a 10 day festival named Špancirfest is held in the city. This lively and fun street festival is one of the largest in Croatia, attracting over 100,000 tourists from all over Croatia and the surrounding countries. The program is jam-packed with concerts, theater, street performances, creative workshops as well as various activities for children.

Nature
Lonjsko Polje Nature Park, which has been nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status, is a 195 square mile stretch of wetlands located in the Posavina region. Just west of Zagreb, you’ll find Žumberak Nature Park and the Samobor Highlands. This area is known for its number of karstic phenomena, with deep canyons and glistening rivers. Old villages and hamlets are dotted between the rolling meadows, vineyards, and forests, where you can go hiking on well-marked trails through the landscape. Along this route, you’ll discover the majestic Sopot Waterfall, which is over 130 feet tall.
Medvednica Nature Park is another popular destination for hikers and nature lovers. The park’s highest peak, Sljeme, offers breathtaking views and can be reached via a scenic hike or cable car.
Castles
After the valley of the river Loire in France, continental Croatia boasts the highest concentration of castles anywhere in the world.
Trakošćan Castle is located 50 miles northwest of Zagreb and is thought to date back to the 13th century. With its well preserved and manicured grounds, it’s a beautiful spot to day-trip to and spend the day immersing yourself in its history or even taking a paddleboat out onto the lake.
Other castles, like Veliki Tabor Castle, perched atop a hill in the Zagorje region, offer an equally impressive historical experience with a museum that tells the tales of Croatian nobility. The panoramic views out over the surrounding hills, cornfields, vineyards and forests make it a stunning setting.
Food and wine
The delectable gastronomy within continental Croatia cannot be forgotten. With diverse cultural influences and local, farm grown ingredients, the food within this region is hearty and comforting.
Indulge in regional delicacies such as štrukli, a baked or boiled pastry filled with cheese, or purica s mlincima, a roast turkey dish served with flatbread. This region of Croatia might not be as well known as Dalmatia or Istria when it comes to wine, but it still has an impressive array to offer. A few varieties that are worth trying include Graševina, a dry white wine, Frankovka, made from Blaufränkisch grapes, and Rajnski Rizling (Riesling), which is often on the sweeter side.
