How to Spend a Day in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik, often referred to as The Pearl of the Adriatic, is a gorgeous seaside city, filled with an inspiring awe that emerges from the city’s eclectic past and jaw-dropping coastal setting. The city is well developed, with a wide range of places to stay, restaurants and cafes to eat at, and activities and excursions to do. 

There is an abundance of things to see and do in the Adriatic Coast’s most famous city, so sometimes it can be challenging to decide how to spend a day in Dubrovnik.

How to Spend a Perfect Day in Dubrovnik 

This itinerary includes the highlights and must-visits in this incredible city, most of which can be fitted into one day considering Dubrovnik’s old town isn’t that large. However, there are so many things to see and do in the area that it would be worth spending longer in Dubrovnik. 

Morning 

Begin spending your day in Dubrovnik early and beat the crowds by heading down to Pile Gate, Dubrovnik’s main entrance into its old town. Built in 1537, this grand gateway is an iconic symbol of the city.

Embark on a private walking tour of Dubrovnik’s ancient city walls, which stretch for 1.2 miles around the city. During your walk, you’ll come across impressive historic sites, such as Fort Bokar and Minceta tower, which date back to 1570. Take in the incredible panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea and the terracotta rooftops of the Old Town from the city’s walls. 

Once you have completed walking Dubrovnik’s city walls, head to Fort Lovrijenac, which is located just outside of the city. Perched on a high rock 121 feet above sea level, the fort looks out over the sea and city walls. 

Midday 

Head into the center of Dubrovnik’s Old Town where you can spend an hour or so wandering through winding stone streets, filled with shops, cafes, and attractions. Stroll through the Stradun, the main walkway through the old town, and appreciate the history that surrounds you. Make sure to visit Rector’s Palace, a Gothic-Renaissance palace, and Sponza Palace, a 16th century palace that now contains the city archives. 

Now that you have worked up an appetite, go for lunch at one of the many restaurants within the old town. Indulge in local Dalmatian delicacies such as black risotto, grilled seafood, or octopus salad, accompanied by a delicious glass of Croatian wine.

Afternoon 

Afternoons in Dubrovnik can be filled with a wide array of exciting activities, ranging from lounging on one of the magnificent beaches or heading out to on an excursion to explore the surrounding areas. 

For breathtaking views of Dubrovnik and the surrounding areas, embark on an exciting cable car ride up Mount Srđ. The ascent is 1,330 feet above sea level and takes you to an old strategic defense spot that now boasts a viewing spot over Dubrovnik below, with Lokrum Island alongside it and the Adriatic Sea stretching as far as the eye can see. 

Next, head down to one of Dubrovnik’s idyllic beaches to soak up some sun or cool off in the shimmering turquoise waters. Banje Beach is the closest beach to the old town, and one of the most popular, but with shallow waters and a wide range of amenities, it’s perfect for families looking to spend some time in the sun. Sveti Jakov beach is also fantastic, with sun loungers to rent and a restaurant for those looking to grab a bite to eat. If you are looking for something further off the beaten path, Betina Beach Cave and Danče Beach are great options. 

The enchanting Elaphiti Archipelago is located a short boat ride away from Dubrovnik and makes for the perfect afternoon excursion or even a day trip if you have time. Head to Lopud Island, the second biggest island in the archipelago, by private charter or ferry where you can spend the afternoon exploring. 

Dubrovnik also has an abundance of excursions and watersports on offer, perfect to entertain the whole family. Go kayaking to explore the best of Dubrovnik’s coastline, as well as the tiny islet and lush nature reserve of Lokrum. Many of the bigger beaches also offer jet skis and paddle boards to rent, where you can spend the afternoon enjoying the Croatian sun.  

Evening 

As the sun begins to dip, head to one of the many sunset spots to watch as the evening light transforms the sky into a symphony of colors. Hues of orange, pink, and purple blend seamlessly, creating a breathtaking palette that reflects off the calm waters of the Adriatic Sea. The best places to watch the sun set in Croatia include the city walls and Buza Bar, a cliffside bar located on the rocks just outside of the city’s walls. It offers an unobstructed view of the sunset, as it descends into the Adriatic Sea in front of you. 

The dining scene in Dubrovnik offers a wealth of delectable dining spots to choose from for dinner. There are fine dining options such as Restaurant 360, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Croatia that offers a 5-course tasting menu inspired by the flavors and ingredients of Dubrovnik and Mediterranean cuisine. Family owned favorites such as Proto are also fantastic and serve traditional Mediterranean cuisine, such as authentic seafood and meat dishes that have been passed down through generations. 

After dinner, go for another stroll through the Stradun in Dubrovnik’s old town. The city takes on a magical feel at night, with the moonlight illuminating the awe-inspiring buildings and the streets emptying out. There are many gelato shops in this area where you can stop and indulge in an after-dinner treat.
